Chappelow K-8 Arts Magnet School
Originally constructed in the 1980s as a K-5 and then later converted to a K-8, Chappelow Arts Magnet was significantly over capacity and lacked modern performance spaces. Cuningham’s remodel of the successful performing arts magnet school alleviates space constraints, adds state-of-the-art performance facilities, and embraces the school’s “Chappelow culture” by creating unique touch points where students can get creative and show off their work.
In addition to expanding classroom sizes, Cuningham’s remodel centers the school around a new, 350-seat flexible performance space with a stage and communal gathering area. Equipped to host a variety of school and community events, this space adds a beating heart to the new school. The addition also includes dedicated spaces for choir, orchestra, band, drama, and dance.
Chappelow Arts Magnet is known for its active, explorative culture of education, which led designers to create moments throughout the new space where students can embrace and flex their creativity. From pianos in the corridors, to student and community artwork displays and outdoor musical instruments at the main entry plaza and playground, the new school allows its learners to go wherever their imagination takes them.
