Creating Space With Meaning

“Every project is an opportunity,” Amy Cheever, Cuningham’s associate principal, tells Multi-Housing News Senior Editor Laura Calugar in the latest episode of our Mission Success: Women in Multifamily podcast series. In a laid-back discussion on architecture, thoughtful design solutions and the power of diverse teams, Cheever admits that her favorite part is seeing how residents interact with the spaces she and her colleagues design for them.

As the leader of Cuningham’s senior living practice, she talks about creating environments that help the elderly feel like home, while constantly having wellness and wellbeing in mind. Implementing new concepts such as biophilia or creating more indoor-outdoor connections are already growing trends in senior living design, Cheever said.

When it comes to her workplace, Cheever noticed that working remotely in the past 15 months and mostly talking with her peers via Zoom calls only brought the team together more, ultimately serving projects by drawing on everyone’s expertise. Toward the end of the conversation, she also provides her pieces of advice for female architects at the beginning of their careers in multifamily design.
