Staunton State Park Visitor Center
As the main point of access to Staunton State Park, this new visitor center is critical to park operations and includes office space for staff, visitor welcome/orientation, education and event space, and all-hours toilet room access. Extensive use of stone and wood helps the building blend in with its natural surroundings. A two-sided fireplace centers the indoor assembly area and outdoor patio, and the building features views out to important park landmarks, such as Lions Head.
Initially designed to be Net Zero Energy, the visitor center still supports a high level of sustainable design. Energy-saving features include a highly insulated envelope, geo-exchange HVAC system and in-floor radiant heating/cooling. The project is also designed to LEED standards.
